Student Government

Student Council is an association of elected and volunteer (at-large) members who represent all Hackettstown High School students. Our goals include providing effective and responsive student governance for our entire community, implementing student activities that enhance the overall learning experience, serving our community both within and beyond our school, and promoting the general welfare of all students.

HHS Student Council honors the voice of the student body and assures it is heard. A unified tone is accomplished by combining of Student Council Officers (President Aditi Pillai and Vice President Anna Newen) and the elected Class Officers from each grade; this body comprises the Executive Committee of Student Council. The Executive Committee meets for lunch monthly with our school and district administrators to discuss school policies, areas of mutual concern, and plan for school-wide events.

All HHS students interested in getting things done-- as well as what gets done-- are welcome and encouraged to participate as Student Council as At-Large Members. Both the Executive Committee and At-Large members form a cohesive leading body, together attending our regular monthly Student Council meetings where all plan and work together toward common goals for the common good of our community. 

 

• Regular Student Council Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from 11:00-11:42 in the HHS Library.

• Class Meetings are held on a regular basis and are scheduled by HHS Administration.

• HHS Student Council Classroom is maintained by the Faculty Advisor, and both the President and Vice President of the Student Council. Our Classroom page is the primary means of communication and members should be checked regularly for announcements, activities, meetings, etc.

• All elected Class Officers in grades 9-12 serve as Representatives to Student Council and must attend all scheduled meetings of the Student Council.

• Student Council's Vice-President is a Junior class member elected in June and serves a two-year term, first as Vice President and then as Student Council President in their Senior year.

• • Student Council President: runs all Regular Meetings, sets meeting agendas, attends all Board of Education Meetings as the HHS representative, and is the primary liaison with HHS Administration.

• • Student Council Vice President: runs Regular Meetings in absence of the President, takes roll call and minutes at Regular Meetings, is the BOE representative in the absence of the Student Council President, and is the secondary liaison with the Administration.

• • Class Officers represent the concerns of the class (9-12) that elected them. Class elections are held in September of each academic year. Any student may run to be an officer for their class each year. Each class has its own Class Advisor and each class serves on a chosen or assigned Student Council committee (Building Improvement, Publicity, Academics, Tiger Pride). They also plan and execute all activities for their respective classes.

• • At-Large Members are volunteer members from the student body. Such members are always welcome and encouraged to attend all Regular Meetings. They are essential to the ongoing work of the Student Council, as they provide new ideas and balance to the group as a whole.
