hi everyone welcome to college prep Advanced English 10 mr. Freeman and this is my 24th year at Hackettstown high school and I'm looking forward to teaching you in the fall back to go over with you some of what we'll be doing the expectation and always know that over the summer if you have any questions especially about the summer reading assignment that you can certainly feel free to email me vocabulary that we work on it. can you see on the screen and it's also called vocabulary workshop and this is the solid book for words that are commonly used mostly and all that often show up on the SAT every unit will have a list from this particular book and hopefully that will help you with being able to express yourself in and understand what you're reading better who sang time preparing for the NJ that's his place in the spring will be doing activities and you'll be learning skills to help you with that test sophomore year is very important for the njsla do you need to pass it for graduation on analytical writing and that's primarily the type of writing that I focus on because it's really the most useful particular type of writing as a style and a voice to it and so will look at several work of literature will be reading articles and we'll be analyzing that and synthesizing that and I'll teach you some strategies and skills to help you with it write about your life a little bit this is in conjunction with a memoir that were reading in class so we'll look at that Memoir and look at your own and then you log to some similar I spent about two weeks specifically on a research project and I take you from the very basics of research the end product which incorporates MLA formatting and I will teach strategies to help you with the whole process again research writing is practical to start learning how to do a common College in Fort Wayne High School so I have some techniques that will be helpful for that some creative writing we have some poetry and we have some other forms of creative writing that will be doing and this is the chance for you to express some of your experiences learning about literary criticism has basically look at works of literature and analyzing them and looking at it from a critical perspective will look at it again song full look at poetry will look at plays I take readings from a variety of sources so of course novels and plays are also over the years I've selected from contemporary magazine and newspapers journals articles that I think are relevant to students today so we'll be looking at some articles about social media and some current events and they're all related to what we're studying in for work so next our skills for college success ITC techniques how to do well in a college class from specifically for humanities courses for English and not only the writing but also management and what your expectations are for the way you express yourself on a college paper finally for grammar punctuation usage I have a variety of activities that deal with grammar punctuation that tend to be issues. Sophomore struggle with additionally I will give you direct feedback on your writing and you'll have to work with my feedback cuz it's directly related to issues of your working with literature summary by John Steinbeck this is available online and this is a fantastic book is compelling and a really interesting read what I read in high school Reddit that's all so it's a really gripping book and it's not especially difficult to read it but the issues are and it's long as you read it carefully and you are familiar with the characters and the events of the story and you really do sit down here and read it carefully you'll do fine on the assessment questions about the summer reading assignment again please email me to follow that with a look at Henry David thoreau's Walden and his essay Civil Disobedience and he's primarily focus on nature writing so we'll read some of his famous lines from cereal and will consider conservation and issues about global warming and environmentalism follow that with Richard Wright black boy and this is the story of a boy growing up at the turn of the century 1900 in the South and its really gripping and amazing that will give you some insight Merchant right to life of a person throwing up during that. Then we'll follow that with the Great Gatsby's is one of my all-time favorite books this is a drama romance set in the 1920s in New York City to drive a roaring twenties and the great ideas of philosophy in Social so we will have a really good time with that work and family in Chicago struggle with poverty will also cover feminism racism play as well then we'll be reading another play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and amazing Play It's So well-written and family concern and what it means just pulling light Wilson Reading another one of my favorite year old who is struggling in school and with friends and social relationships relationships in general and he ends up wandering around New York City for a few days and book and also books in American literature so if you have any questions again please feel free to contact me over the summer and I'm looking forward to seeing you in the fall
